What is a Miscast Cabaret?
A Miscast Cabaret is an arrangement of different acts, whether musical or non-musical, that are put together into one show that features performers in roles they would traditionally not be cast in based on a variety of reasons.
Miscast is a very popular trend in the theater world – MCC Theater does a Miscast Gala and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS does a Broadway Backwards Benefit every year to tremendous results. Think:
By changing who and how a song is performed, the dynamic or meaning of a song can be altered, which creates a new perspective for the participants as well as the audience that can sometimes be humorous or very thought-provoking!
What will the YAC Miscast Cabaret look like?
Our Young Adult Conservatory’s (YAC) definition of Miscast will welcome gender, age, vocal range, and archetype of all types! Our YAC Miscast Cabaret will feature solos, duets, small group numbers, and full ensemble numbers from shows or roles that eTc may not otherwise typically perform in our mainstage or summer camp productions.
Is there a theme this year?
Yes! Get ready to step back in time as we celebrate the dazzling era that defined musical theatre! This year’s YAC Miscast Cabaret pays tribute to Broadway’s Golden Age—the unforgettable decades from the early 1940s through the early 1960s that brought us sweeping melodies, larger-than-life characters, and timeless storytelling that set the stage for everything we love about musicals today. Expect classic showstoppers, unexpected twists, and all the miscast fun you know and love—performed with a nostalgic Broadway flair!
What will the program include?
The program will be a combination of Zoom and in-person rehearsals. During these rehearsals, we will discuss professional Miscast performances and work on our own selections to perform at our YAC Miscast Cabaret.
All participants will perform in the two large group ensemble numbers
Participants have the option to audition for a solo, duet, or small group ensemble (more details will be provided at the first Zoom Rehearsal)
